HAPPINESS ISN'T ALWAYS HAPPY

Well, today's post isn't just a regular post.. It isn't about you or me. It is about something quite peculiar..
For this, I would like you to meet someone first.
Meet S(short for stick figure, so no reference to real life). You'll always find S smiling. He is an easy-going guy without much problems.

He's got a very loving family too! His parents are SO COOL! Whenever S is angry, his father would imitate his mother to make him laugh!
But, S has a weird problem... Whenever his parents make him laugh, he feels a strange fear in his heart...
S has the bestest friends as well! They play with S, laugh with S and enjoy with S! But, whenever they ask S to come with them for a birthday party or any other party, he straightaway denies it. It's not that S is shy or introverted. He's just.... AFRAID. Afraid of something we have no idea about..

S CAN BE HAPPY, BUT DOESN'T WANT TO BE HAPPY. Quite the opposite, right? S thinks that he doesn't deserve this happiness...

S is afraid of nothing else, but HAPPINESS itself. And, this fear is known as CHEROPHOBIA.

It's probably true to say that many of us are searching for happiness throughout our lives, be it from career or relationships. So, the idea that someone could have a fear of happiness, sounds almost impossible to believe!
I've been doing a lot of research about CHEROPHOBIA lately. Cherophobia is a phobia where a person has an irritational aversion to being happy. Individuals suffering from it may deliberately avoid experiences that invoke positive emotions or happiness.
The primary reason for aversion to happiness is, a belief that happiness will cause bad things to happen.
These people usually create a link between 'pleasure' and 'pain', which then becomes intrinsically linked in the brain. For instance, you were having the best time of your life, but just then something devastating happened to you or your family. Well, some take it as just a fluke of luck, while others find it hard to recover from. They start blaming themselves for being happy, and thus coming to the conclusion- I DON'T DESERVE TO BE HAPPY.
You know what aggravates this fear? The fact that everything is transient. No pleasure in this world would last forever. So, what's the use of running after these pleasures anyway?

"Those with an aversion to happiness have filtered their perceptions to remember only the bad thing that happened after a happy time"

But, please don't confuse cherophobics with sad or despondent people. Stephanie Yeboah, a successful blogger and freelance writer based in London, UK has been living with cherophobia from the age of 11. She says that it is contrary to the expectations of people, because she's quite a 'happy' and 'upbeat' person.

I too, can somehow relate with S. Believe me, it pains a lot, when you are afraid to do things that you love. It's not, that you are fearful of doing those things, but you are afraid of WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN NEXT.

I am extremely sorry if you found this post boring. However, it took me a lot of time to draw those stick figures(yes, I suck at drawing)! But, at least you learnt something new! I'm sure you didn't know what was Cherophobia, did you? There's another interesting phobia, by the way. PHOBOPHOBIA- the phobia of phobias..

So, take care everyone.
Until then bye bye hoomans!
